I really love cabinet cards. They were a very civilized way to share an image with friends and family before the days of Facebook and Instagram. This one is from the studio of the Neff Brothers, which was one of Hood River’s first. I’m not sure how they convinced all three children, the dog, two bird and a kitten to stay still, but the result is charming.
I’ve been trying to establish a chronology for Hood River photo studios to date cabinet cards. Here’s what I have so far for start dates: G. Boney- 1889, Neff Bros.- 1893, L. Bradley- 1899, William Rogers- 1900, Deitz Photo- 1905. I’m working to refine these dates so we know when each studio started and ended operation.
These kids are identified as “The Shutes.” Anyone know them?

What a wonderful photo that shows so much about "everyday" children of that era. Those stockings had to be hot in such weather as we are trapped in at present. Is it obvious this is a very caring family when it comes to "critters."
I can’t say for certain, but I have a strong hunch that these probably are some of the children of Chester and Connie Shute. One could very well be Mary Elizabeth who became Mrs. Plog and in turn the mother of Louise (Mrs. Tad) Perry.

totally agree with tough…. I have no idea how many attempts it would take to get this absolutely perfect shoot; and they are hinting at smiling….well maybe not the dog.

reminds me of my mother’s button hook collection….a tool I never understood or used.

I checked with Candy Perry (Wakamatsu). It’s not Louise’s mother. Perhaps another Shute?

I checked with my aunt Evelyn Plog, second daughter to Mary & Louis. She thought the shoes were not her parents era. I have a feeling it is more Chester’s siblings, Carrie Shute Coe (b. 1879), Lillie Shute Smith (b. 1881) and Charles Shute (b. 1884). That seems about the right time frame for the Neff Brothers. OR it could be another Shute family 🙂
