It is apparent that first off these trees have not been pruned. I would think that would contribute to the reason for propping, if that is what you are referring to. Pruning would have relieved a lot of weight off them. Doesn’t appear to be an overly heavy crop of Bosc pears. Over the years with modern technology the trees are not as big.
I have seen people still propping when their crop is heavy….

We used to use props, but mostly we tied the trees. Twine was run between branches to support the load. After harvest we didn’t need to gather the props.
