Here’s a nice cabinet card of Charles Sproat. You may recognize him from the historic landmark placard on the Sproat Building downtown. Feel free to fill in some biographical detail.

Full name was Charles Henry Sproat. He was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin to William Cullen and Phoebe Ann (Hoover) Sproat. Both of his parents are buried here in H. R.
He married Nettie Brown and they had three daughters:
Irene who married Joseph Clare Henkle
Marian Louise who married Richard W. Skibbe
Edith who married Edward Alexander Vannet.
I am fairly certain that
Edward and Edith Vannet was Ed Vannet’s parents, who we all knew as the coach/teacher in Hood River.

He must have been an apple grower because he was the secretary and manager of the Hood River Apple Growers Union.
In 1910 he won the $1,000 and a solid silver trophy cup for best carload of Spitzenberg apples at the National Apple Show in Spokane.

This guy looks like a no-nonsense kind of guy who could easily have been an ancestor of the Ed Vannet who used to run a tight ship at HRHS. And he managed to do it with a good sense of humor.

Yes, he was a fruit grower in Pine Grove. His ranch was right near the PIne Grove Grocery.
Yes, Buzz, he was Vannet’s grandpa.

I think Irene was Betty Jubitz’s mother. I know that Betty and Ed were cousins.
