How could I resists sharing these great old busses, from an era when busses and trains were the most common way people got around? That’s of course thre Columbia Gorge Hotel, which is still greeting travelers, though probably not many arriving in busses anymore.
Union Pacific Stages was started in 1927, and eventually became part of Greyhound. We could try to guess at the ages of these classic vehicles, but fortunately the folks at “Motor Coach Age” magazine did a deep dive into the vehicles of the Union Pacific Stages in their March-April 1991 issue. They show the double decker bus on the left in a 1937 image on page 14, so “late 1930s” is a reasonable date for our image.

That’s a really good article in Motor Coach Age documenting overland travel 70-100 years ago.
As a kid growing up in SoCal, I rode many city busses and remember Greyhound as being the largest, long range bus service. My first Greyhound ride was in 1960 going from LA to San Diego and delivered to the US Navy Training Camp aka “boot camp”.

Similar experience Dale Mine was from AF boot camp to HR from Texas in 1961….same bus 10 or so drivers.
