I think this is the last image we have of the 1910 Barrett School. It is dated 1960. A 1919 image shows some saplings growing next to the stairs, which by 1960 grew into these nice trees. Does anyone know when the Barrett School was demolished, and exactly where it was? The classic sign which says, “19 BARRETT SCHOOL 10” is in the atrium of the museum.
A special note for those of you who never knew the joys of film cameras: The “Dec 60” date in the margin is the date the film was processed and printed. Since a roll of film held from 12 to 36 exposures, it wasn’t uncommon for film to sit in a camera for a couple of months… or years… before you took the last few shots and sent it in for developing. In this case we can presume this image was taken between spring and fall, not in December.

Barrett School was located On Barrett rd, directly to the S of the end of Methodist Lane. I believe it stopped operating as a school the year Westside was opened…which must have been in / or near ’68, I think?
The old School house stood for quite a while after that- I remember going by it on bike rides throughout the 70’s and poking about the grounds. Seems to me it slowly fell into ruin and was then demolished by the folks the bought that land.

Barrett and Oak Grove schools both closed mid school year when West side opened- and those kids were sent to the new school. Oak Grove had 1-4th grade I think, while Barrett was 5-8th. I remember it was a very odd experience, collecting all your school stuff , assembling in the gym and then being BUSSED to the brand new Westside school! Having always walked to school this was a big change for a 3rd grader.

Thanks another hukari, that location makes sense. It must have been an experience to go from a well-worn old building to a shiny new one.
Based on your dates, the Westside School is now as old as Barrett School was when it closed! 58 years.
