Historic Hood River
Jantzen Painting
5-18-2026

Notes
Grace selected this wonderful 1921 Jantzen advertisement from Vogue Magazine for your morning enjoyment today. The divers pose may be the inspiration of the tin divers we saw a few weeks ago.
The advertising copy is highly evocative, and the painting brings you back to the 1920s. Catalina was a popular tourist destination by this era, as we saw in this image.
It’s interesting to see the brand endorsement by 1920 Olympic athletes, including the great Duke Kahanamoku.

Thorn
Just amazing, so much info and local influence that changed women’s swimming fashion and cultures worldwide. Coining the phrase swimsuit, calling it “the Jantzen”, glimpsing the Catalina glory days, the athletes’ endorsements and artist’s caption credit–both adding to the women’s history. And, the man with the ubiquitous cigarette and questionable motives. Well played Ruth, well played.
Maybe those tin divers are advertising the children’s swimsuit line. Thanks Arthur!
