Historic Hood River
Behind the Curtains

Notes
Today’s post is a little look behind the curtains at Historic Hood River to show how our physical media is digitized for your enjoyment and education. This is a page from a book of 35mm slides in the Sally Donovan Collection. It’s important to preserve the original context with any collection. In this case, this page shows Sally’s ordering of these slides, and the slide carriers include her notes as well as date information from the film processor. After scanning this page to capture that information, each image is scanned using the film scanner so we can capture it in good detail, then metadata is added to the film scan (such as date or Sally’s notes). Our image cataloging software (Adobe Lightroom) lets us keep both this survey image and the slide scans themselves together so a future researcher can figure out how Sally set this up, even if they don’t have access to her physical collection in our archive.
