“New High School”

The Hood River school district finished constructing a brand new high school in the summer of 1927. It received its first students in early September, and welcomed the community for a formal dedication on September 23. Thanks to Class of 1928 Secretary Katherine Vaughan we have this program from the dedication 99 years ago, and we also have a little insight into the lucky first graduating class of the new school.
The Hood River Glacier covered the event in this article. It’s not their most information filled article, but at least we learn the school cost $175,000 to build (about $3.2 million today) and they were hiring a new teacher to teach English and history at the junior high… as well as basketball and gym at the high school. With that portfolio, I suspect they had a specific woman in mind.
This building still serves the community as the Hood River Middle School. I hope they are preparing an appropriate celebration in the fall of 2027!

Keep us tuned into what celebration is being planned, the HRHS class of 1959 could reunion at the same time in 2027.
I still have fond memories including the small gym.

As I recall,Arlen,the backcourt line was so close to the wall that when in bounding, the rule about stepping on the line was waived.
