We saw this image a while back, but this scan is direct from the original Ella May Davidson negative so it’s worth a second look. Based on the automobile it’s safe to date this image to shortly before Harry Dewitt built his Ford Garage here circa 1918. The Hotel Oregon was ready to serve motorists with its “Ladies Rest Room”.  Dale and Meyer were providing tailoring for both men and women, and the auto supply store was stocked with Republic tires, as well as plenty of “Free Air”. They also have signs advertising Michelin Tires, Red Crown Gasoline, and Zerolene oils and greases.
Republic Tires has a great logo featuring “Old Man Mileage” and his dog “Stag” (apparently for the tires special “Staggard Tread”). You can learn all about Republic and see some great advertising artwork in this document. You can see a good view of the logo on page 14.
About 1918 Harry Dewitt built his garage at this site. It later became the American Legion hall, and was more recently renovated into the Columbia Center For the Arts.
The Hotel Oregon is about to embark on its new life as the “Lightwell Hotel” which is scheduled to open in a couple of weeks.
