Hmmm. How useful would a horse be for climbing Mt. Hood? Or is this a mule?
This would be about the era when Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated south pole expedition tried to use ponies to haul provisions.

Wow. These old-time mountain climbing pics and the early mountain climbing groups of Oregon, like the Mazamas and Crag Rats, always make me imagine the pioneer women that did this wearing dresses. Maybe some local mountaineers can pinpoint this exact spot for us. And the horse is peculiar for sure, but I’m guessing it’s to carry that huge amount of rope. So my question is, what’s all that rope for?? Looks like at least a 1000 foot long. Must be something beyond mountain climbing gear…maybe it’s an early guideline being installed?

It is a horse. I would assume they suffer from elevation just as humans do??

You have to wonder how high up they took the horse. It would have been one heck of a picture to see the horse at the summit!!

Looks like the Cooper Spur route to me. I can’t imagine the horse going much higher, poor thing.
