E. L. Smith Building
Notes
The E. L. Smith Building at 213-215 Oak Street as constructed in 1904 during the first wave of brick buildings downtown. In this view the Wood’s Grocery shares the ground floor with the Hood River District Land Company, and Dr. Pineo shares the upper floor with Dr. Dutro. We’ve seen the interior of Dr. Pineo’s dental offices in this post.
Based on the current tenants and the lack of pavement on Oak Street, this view is from sometime between 1911 and 1913.
The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. You can click through to the nomination form and the state inventory form from this page. The building has survived mostly intact, though it lost the bay windows some time ago.
The man posing on the corner? My best guess is Alfred T. Allen, president of the land company.

The next building behind this on seems to be the same construction. A little elevation but two bay windows and same roof corner piece. Is it still standing also? Amazing it’s still there!

I suppose they were worried about bricks or a dentist chair falling on someone’s head, but I like the bay windows.

LE, my guess is those bay windows leaked with every rain. A lot of the fancy roof lines and windows we think make old buildings special also make them maintenance nightmares.
