Let’s start the new year with a little color. This view of 2nd Street is from 1959. The city hall building should look familiar, though the police station has replaced the fire station in the basement. What’s now a city hall parking lot was then a 76 gas station. They were hoping their customers wold join their “Sports Club” and they were announcing a “Spring Sale” for $4.25 or $7.50. Maybe an oil change? Meyer’s Cleaners was in the “Horsefeathers Building” which now houses a boutique hotel, and you can see the bottom of the Second Street Stairs. That great van driving up the hill advertises a plumbing business. Any IDs on the yellow pickup or the peach sedan?

The yellow pick up looks like a 1955 F250 (3/4 ton) V8 and the peach color car looks like a 1954 Ford 4 door sedan, maybe the Customline model?

I’m pretty sure Meyers Cleaners is on the location of the “Horsefeathers Building,” but it’s not the same building. I was in the courthouse in the late ’80s (maybe early ’90s?) watching as they burned down the building that was standing there, in order to build the Horsefeathers Building from scratch. (It was originally Big Horse before they changed the name to Horsefeathers.) The fire department used it as training exercise I believe.

I was there today. The street was much more congested.
