Which Langille?

Our collection identifies this as “Dug Langille” (aka Doug, Doog, Harold Douglas Langille) but I suspect it is actually Will. In any case it is a good excuse to talk about Doug and his more famous brother Will Langille. I recommend you start with this great biography in the Oregon Encyclopedia. You’ll read all about their time in Alaska, association with Gifford Pinchot and Jack London… just read it.
The Oregon Encyclopedia article includes an OHS image of Will and Doug together. You’ll see why I have trouble identifying this as Doug. In fact, the OHS image immediately reminded me of this Anne Lang image. I believe it includes Doug to the right and Will to the left, from their days working at Cloud Cap Inn guiding tourists up Mt. Hood. Their mother, Sarah, managed Cloud Cap Inn during the years Anne Lang visited.

Even though, from my backyard, I look at Mazama Glacier on the SE side of Mt Adams, and I am familiar with the name Langille Ridge and Langille Peak on the west side of Mt Adams, I don’t know any of the history of how those names came about.
Always something new to read, research and learn, isn’t there?
