This would make an amazing before/after pairing, but it’s changed so much I doubt you can get anything close to this vantage point today. This image is captioned “The beginning of Bonneville Dam, a view from the Quarter boat. –John E. Long (or Lang?)”
We previously saw the Quarter Boat which housed the team surveying and planning the dam circa 1930.
The Google Maps view below is just a guess. I have no idea which way the camera was pointing in the 1930s image, or where it was located relative to the dam site.

one of my favorite moments during our ACL columbia river cruise in october was transiting the Bonneville Dam Locks with a UP freight next “door”. the river perspective is quite different from our many land trips.

Agreed AS. I would recommend everybody take the passenger train from Portlandto White Salmon just to see the very different perspective of the river.

I am going to guess the camera is pointing east. I think if it was pointing west you could see Beacon Rock.

agreed Nails….and immediately upon boarding the Empire Builder in Portland, go to the observation lounge for the ride. after our ACL cruise, we came back to Portland via the builder…..very dirty windows in the observation lounge and the boarding time in Spokane was a grim 4am but a great ride and a good way to get home.
