Unfortunately the notes associated with this set of 35mm slides of the Westside Elementary School don’t provide much information on the year or the people. As always knowledge anything you can offer is appreciated! We’re told this was the “Resource Center.”

I think I see some fingers being used for counting. My mother in law, who taught first grade for centuries was not against using fingers. She said it was a tool kids discovered.
But I think if she had caught a middle school student using their fingers she would have rapped their fingers with a ruler. By then, you should have it memorized.

I was principal of Westside for the first 18 years. What a great experience–great kids, great parents, great staff!! I think the teadher in the p[icture is Shirley Mallon

Mr. Turner – I’m glad you are still doing okay. I remember you as the principal at the junior high. My fingers and hand work just fine, if you happen to know what that refers to. Sorry about Susan.

We believe that is our mother, Shirley Mallon in the photo. Probably around 70-71. She wasn’t at the school very long and wasn’t a regular teacher at that time. Later taught 4th grade for many years at May Street.

Mr. Turner, I echo Jeff’s condolences for Susan. I (we) moved from Barrett to Westside as 6th graders. It was an amazing time, moving from that old, 3-story building to the new, fresh school without interior walls and carpeting. There wasn’t much of a playground, though! My teacher was Mr. Vaught.

Yes, the devices on tables in background are filmstrip projectors, and the colorful files on the shelves are likely SRA reading exercises, each color indicating a different comp level.
That carpet often surprised with static electricity ‘shocks’ –
The playground at the time was dirt mounds and an open field, I think? And an outdoor covered basketball court?
