Notes

This image of Ollie Mason and daughter Hattie Joy Mason is titled “1st Residence”. The Masons purchased 80 acres of timberland in Pine Grove in 1896 and created the Liberty Home Orchard. Hattie Joy was born in 1891, so I would place this image between 1896 and 1900. Images dated to 1904 show a more substantial residence.

My mom grew up during the depression. She also had a father who spent more time carousing than providing for his family. But…..she did have a pet chicken. One night, for supper they had chicken dinner. A real treat. When my mom, the oldest of five, asked where the chicken came from, there was absolute silence.

She often told me that story, so it must have left a traumatic impression on her.
