We’ve seen many images of Charles Reither and his home on 18-Mile Island (aka Chicken Charlie Island), but this one comes with a special treat. Rodger Nichols gave a lecture about the island this February at the Original Wasco Courthouse History Forum, which included the tour of the island in the video below. As with any of Rodger’s lectures you’re guaranteed to learn all sorts of fun local history. Rodger even presents the evidence for the railroad on the island– the one I’ve never been able to find in the extensive photographic record.

The opening remarks were made by Eric Gleason from The Dalles. He also owns the 1918 Stanley Steamer touring car that was at WAAAM for several years. Eric is also an archaeologist at National Park Service. A great guy and was fun sharing his Stanley on Second Saturdays at WAAAM.

Finally a comprehensive history of the island and really good. I only wish the audio was better. Something they can work to improve for future events.
