Today’s challenge is to identify this image and provide some context. It’s tightly cropped, but any of you who were around at this time will probably remember it. Tomorrow we’ll zoom out to show this piece of history in all its glory. I’ll post related pieces of Hood River history for the rest of the week.

Looking at the welds on whatever this is on, I’m guessing this is on Ken Jernsted’s Flying Tiger? Or maybe on the USS Hood River

Obviously painted on a large metal tank or some such structure around town? It wouldn’t be that old Dee tank by the old hardboard plant? Tomorrow will tell..

Seems like I saw a picture of a ship on Ebay about a year ago, I think it was named the SS Hood River, not sure but I think it was a tanker.

google/wikipedia does return a wwII era type t2 tanker named hood river. ya might be onto something. earlier search was for a uss, rather than ss.

Think it was the old PCFC 866, called the Banning, which was at one time owned by the Hood River Port.
